Taking another step forward in the early stages of the international season, Athletics South Africa has announced a 44-member Preparation Squad for the 2017 CAA African Junior Championships in Tlemcen, Algeria which have been postponed to 29 June and 2 July.
With the continental spectacle forming the pinnacle of the international season for many of the nation’s top Under-20 athletes, 30 men lead the list including the likes of Gift Leotlela, who earned the 200m silver medal at the World U-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz last year.
Fellow Olympic sprinter Clarence Munyai, who holds the SA Junior 200m record, and Discus thrower Werner Visser, who earned gold at the 2015 World U-18 Championships in Cali, are part of this group.
The women’slist consisting of 14 athletes is spearheaded by Taylon Bieldt, the national junior record holder in the 100m Hurdles, who finished seventh in her discipline at the World U-20 Championships last season.
“We are excited with this announcement as it offers our junior athletes a window of opportunity to be the next stars of the future.Those who will make it into the final team will compete against the best of African athletes in this age group.
“I wish everyone the luck they need and trust that they will work extremely hard to convince all of us that they deserve a place in the final team,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA.
The final national team for the CAA African Junior Championships will be announced closer to the event.
